County Cricket Round 4 – 2024

2 teams from each Division sat out this round, Kent and Lancashire from Division 1 and Sussex and Glamorgan from Division 2. Day 1, when I’m starting out on this, saw a full day’s play up and down the country, in spite of weather predictions amongst fans. It remains to be seen if that stays that way over the full round. In writing up Day 1 I can see that Headingley didn’t get a full days play. Starting Day 2 as I watch the rain put in Chelmsford in Essex, so we’ll see what tomorrow brings! Coming back after writing up Day 2 it seems the abad weather arrived earlier across the country.

Division 1

Durham v Essex – Seat Unique Riverside, Durham. Scott Borthwick won the toss for Durham and elected to bat. Match Drawn

Durham 358 All Out & 131 for 2, Essex 488 All Out

Another year of cricket another year of writing about Durham century makers Durham were 11 for 2 in the 6th i=over then 84 for 3, before new signing Colin Ackermann and Ollie Robinson put on 137 for the 4th wicket, Robinson scored 90 from 86 balls, an entertaining innings I should imagine as he hit 15 Fours, Ackermann joined the Durham Century Club with §112 from 231 balls, a different kind of innings. Durham made 358 in 92.5 overs. 4 of the Essex bowlers shared the wickets.

There was no play on Day 3.

Sam Cook opened the batting with Dean Elgar, captain for the match while Tom Westley stayed at home with a baby due. The pair faced 2 overs and the day finished with Essex on 5 with their wickets intact. Durham bowled the full 96 overs on Day 2, leaving me regretting not going to the game! Night Watchman Cook and Elgar put on 64 for the 1st wicket. That brought opener Feroze Khushi in; Elgar was out for 46, bringing last year’s opener Nick Browne in for his first appearance this season, the pair put on 166 for the 3rd wicket; with the exciting Khushi (Yes, I am a fan) scoring §107 from 165 balls, he hit 16 Fours but played a calmer innings than we’ve seen so far this year. At the end of the day Browne was on 94* from 219 balls and Jordan Cox 19*, Essex finished the day on 314 for 3. Essex batted on with better weather on Day 4. Browne was run out on 184 from 321 balls. Surrey v Hampshire – The Oval – Rory Burns won the toss and put Hampshire in to bat. Surrey won by an innings and 11 runs.

Hampshire 151 All Out, Surrey 359 All Out

This was a somewhat strange day at the Oval, Hampshire were bowled out in 44.4 overs for just 151. Nick Gubbins top scored with 45. all 4 bowlers used took wickets. All but 1 of Hants wickets were to catches.

At the end of Day 1 Surrey were 123 for 5 having faced 48.2 overs. Burns remains not out 39 and Ryan Patel in at 6 scored 41. All 5 of the Surrey batters were bowled! Only 1 of the Hants batters befell that fate. (Thanks to Darren Gill for that tip!). Having been 44 for 4 then 119 for 5 Surrey most definitely pulled their innings back. Burns and Jordan Clark out on98 for the 8th wicket, with Burns making 113 from 256 balls. Clark finished the innings on 106* from 1022 balls as he ran out of partners. Surrey scored their 359 in 109.4 overs. Kyle Abbot took 4 for a heavy toll of 104 in his 30 overs.

Hampshire faced 15 overs and lost 2 wickets on Day 2, scoring 31 runs. I was watching progress all day and this is one ground that got some play on Day 3. Just 32 overs but Hants lots another 3 wickets and finished the day on 116 for 5 still trailling by 92 runs. It took Surrey another 30 overts to get the job done, Hants were bowled out in 77.2 overs Keeper Ben Brown had the best score of 45. Dan Worrall took 5 for 47.

Hannon-Dalby took the extra wicket and finished with 5 for 78 from 24.1 overs.
