I’m coming to this one late so I’m going to go mostly with photos to describe this wonderful win for Bangladesh!

Tamim Iqbal opened with Soumya Sarkar, he batted for 40 minutes, facing 29 balls, he made 16 runs before he was caught by Quinton de Kick from the bowling of Andile PhehlukwayoTamim Iqbal opened with Soumya Sarkar, he batted for 40 minutes, facing 29 balls, he made 16 runs before he was caught by Quinton de Kick from the bowling of Andile Phehlukwayo. Bangladesh were 60 for 1 in the 9th over.

Soumya batted for 58 minutes, he faced one ball more than Tamim, 30 and scored 42, including 9 Fours, he was caught by de Kock from the bowing of Chris Morris. Bangladesh were 75 for 2 when he was out in the 12th over.

Shakib Al Hasan had come in at 3, he and Mushfiqur Rahim put on 142 for the 3rd wicket, 2 experienced batsmen they were a joy to watch. Shakib batted for 117 minutes, faced 84 balls and scored 75. Bangladesh had moved to 217 for 3 and South Africa were struggling on the bowling front. Shakib was however bowled by Imran Tahir, at 40 he’ll be doing himself some damage with his exuberant celebrations!

South Africa seemed to be a bowler short, with Lungi Ngidi only managing to bowl 4 overs. Aiden Markram put his all into his 5 overs but he conceded 38 runs, Chris Morris went for 73 in his 10, albeit taking 2 wickets. Ngidi shipped 34 runs in just 4 overs.

Mohammad Mithun joined Mishfuqir, he contributed 21 from 21 balls before we were treated to another Tahir celebration, as he was bowled.

Mushfiqur, who stands at just 5ft 2 is a wonderful batsman to watch, he batted for just over 2 hours, scoring 78 from 8o balls. Phehlukweyo was still around to take his wicket, he was caught by Rassie van der Dussen. Bangaldesh were 250 for 5 after 42.1 overs.

With just under 8 overs remaining Bangladesh put on a further 80 runs, with Mosaddek Hossain contributing 26 from 20 balls and Mahmudullah 46 from just 33. Try as they did South Arica weren’t able to restrict them and they finished on 330 for 6 setting South Africa a record run chase.

Celebration time!

Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram opened the batting for South Africa. I’d seen my first comedy run out courtesy of South Africa during the Champions Trophy in 2017, they went for it again in this match. A highly accomplished batsman de Kock had reached just 23 when he was run out bu Mushfiqur. South Africa were 49 for 1 in the 10th over.

That disaster brought captain Faf du Plessis to the crease, he and Markram made 53 in 10 overs before Markram was out for 45 he’d faced 56 balls and was bowled by Shakib. South Africa were 102 for 2 in the 20th over.

I think du Plessis is one of my favourite international cricketers, he’s having a difficult World Cup as captain, he had a good innings in this one with the bat, making 62 from 53 balls before a ball from Mehedi got through. South Africa were 147 for 3 after 26.4 overs.

The middle order of David Miller, Rassie van der Dussen and JP Duminy added 124 runs between them and the 4 bowlers just 41.

That all added up to 309 for 8 for South Africa, a shortfall of 21 runs. and a great win for Bangladesh.

Congratulations Bangladesh!
